Dye Flakes

About Dyes

Oil soluble dyes are colorants which dissolve in wax. This type of dye is generally used for solid coloring candles. Dyes have good combustion and do not clog wicks during burn. Dyes in general tend to fade, although dye flakes are processed for maximum light stability. Conducting fade and burn tests is always recommended. Dye flakes are clean and easy to use and give vivid and brilliant colors. They are safe for the candlemaker and for the candlemaker’s customers. The dye flakes comply with OSHA, TSCA and EN 071 (part 3) legislation.

Usage and Dosage Instructions

Dissolve dye flakes in the wax formulation at approximately 185F - 85C. Using an electric mixer to stir the dye flakes into your wax composition speeds up the process. With dye/pigment blends, an electric mixer is highly recommended to help disperse the color. (For improved light stability, some colors are supplied in dye/pigment blends. These colors have good light stability, excellent burn properties, and high heat stability.) Always make sure the color flakes are completely melted before pouring the candle.

For best results, use wax melters and batch tanks with indirect heating. Direct heating will deteriorate wax and destroy dyes. Temperatures that are too high as well as maintaining the wax formulation at high temperatures for extended lengths of time can result in color deviations.

Colors should be stored under dry conditions and at room temperature.

Solid-Coloring Dosage

0.1% to 0.2% by weight of wax formulation (typically between 1 and 2 grams per kilogram - between .5 grams (.018 oz) and 1 gram (.035 oz) per pound). Typically one pound of color for approximately 700 to 1000 lbs of paraffin.

For color consistency, always add the same quantity of color to your wax formulation.

Some wax blends will require a higher dosage of color due to the opacity of the wax blend. The shade of color attained with each dye will change in different wax blends. Additives such as microwax, PE, Vybar and stearine can affect the strength and shade of the color. Fragrances may react with the dye and can change the properties and the appearance of colors. The color of the fragrance used may affect the shade of color of the dye.
